Can Stack Motors

Overview

Can stack motors are open-loop stepper motors known for long life and excellent performance, well suited to a wide range of applications through the simplest way to convert electrical pulses into mechanical motion. They can be driven directly by a pulse train or a microprocessor, and rotational characteristics are determined by the pulse sequence (direction), frequency (speed), and count (rotation amount). As long as step integrity is maintained, error does not accumulate.

Key Features

  • Excellent open-loop control solution
  • High continuous torque output relative to package size
  • Long life from high-quality bearings
  • Unipolar and bipolar winding options
  • Simple design suited to applications needing reasonable accuracy and moderate torque

Construction

Can stack motors are typically a 2-phase design consisting of two claw-tooth-pole stator cups around the windings. The rotor has the same number of pole pairs as the stator, and the stator cup poles are offset by half a pitch, creating four discrete positions per pole pitch. For example, a 12-pole-pair motor produces 48 steps per revolution (7.5°/step).

Applications

  • Clinical diagnostic equipment
  • Valve control
  • Pharmaceutical dispensing
  • Robotic antenna positioning
  • Printers and copiers

How easy is it to control a Portescap motor?

PMD's Axis Wizard applies pre-tuned parameters automatically once you pick your motor model from a list — it even self-diagnoses and corrects wiring or rotation-direction mistakes.

  • Parameters applied automatically from a model list
  • Wiring & direction errors self-diagnosed and corrected
  • Auto-Run scripts work without a host PC
